Beginning July 31, 2026, all United Indian Health Services locations will become commercial tobacco-free.
This means cigarettes, vapes, and other commercial tobacco products will no longer be used on UIHS property by staff, clients, or visitors.
This change is part of UIHS’s ongoing commitment to helping create healthier and safer spaces for our communities.
Importantly, this policy does not apply to the traditional or ceremonial use of tobacco.
UIHS respects and honors the sacred role traditional tobacco continues to hold within many American Indian communities and cultural practices.
Commercial tobacco use continues to harm the health of many people and families. By creating commercial tobacco-free spaces, UIHS hopes to support healthier environments while continuing to approach the issue with compassion, understanding, and support.
UIHS understands that quitting smoking or vaping can be difficult. Because of this, our focus remains on support, education, and access to helpful resources without judgment.
Support is available through the UIHS NATIVE Tobacco Project, which offers smoking cessation classes, wellness support, and educational resources for people interested in reducing or quitting commercial tobacco use.
