UIHS Honored with Area/Regional Health Warrior Award

United Indian Health Services (UIHS) is honored to receive an Area/Regional Health Warrior Award from the National Indian Health Board (NIHB) recognizing our continued commitment to serving American Indian communities throughout Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

The recognition comes at a meaningful time for UIHS. In 2025, we celebrated 55 years of providing healthcare services to our community. From our humble beginnings providing services from a mobile van in Weitchpec, UIHS has grown to serve approximately 12,000 clients through 11 locations across Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

Over the past several years, UIHS has continued to expand access to care throughout our service area. We opened four additional sites and remodeled our largest facility to expand medical and pharmacy services. We implemented a new electronic health record system and secured two Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) grants that will help expand behavioral health services for children, families, and communities in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.

Today, across our 11 locations, UIHS provides a broad range of services to support the health and wellness of our communities, including medical, dental, behavioral health, vision, pharmacy, rehabilitation, and tribal public health services. Together, these programs allow us to care for clients and families through many different stages of life and health needs.

UIHS also became the first organization in California to bill for Traditional Health Practices, helping establish an important statewide precedent for providing care that honors and incorporates the traditional values and practices of American Indian communities.

In 2025 alone, UIHS provided approximately 142,762 clinical and tribal public health visits and services and filled approximately 94,000 prescriptions.

Receiving this National Indian Health Board Award is a reflection of the dedication of our staff, Board of Directors, tribal partners, clients, and communities who have supported and shaped UIHS throughout our history.

As we celebrate this recognition, we remain grounded in the purpose that has guided our work for more than 55 years:

“To work together with our clients and community to achieve wellness through health services that reflect the traditional values of our American Indian Community.”

We thank the National Indian Health Board for this honor and, most importantly, thank our communities for continuing to place their trust in UIHS.
