RIVER IS LIFE
COMMERCIAL TOBACCO ISN’T

NATIVE Tobacco Project
The NATIVE Tobacco Project, a program of the United Indian Health Services’ Tribal Public Health Division, has been supported by the California Tobacco Prevention Program for 35 years. The project’s work focuses on reducing commercial tobacco-related illness and premature death among
American Indian and Alaska Native communities in Humboldt and Del Norte counties, in partnership with community members, Tribal members, and Tribal councils.
The NATIVE Tobacco Project is focusing on:
- Promoting Kick It California Cessation Services
- Provide direct in-person cessation classes with commercial tobacco users
- Recruit members for the Community Outreach Resources and Education (C.O.R.E.) program to facilitate essential feedback and insights on program initiatives
- Collaborating with local tribal/non-tribal tobacco prevention programs
- Providing information to both Del Norte and Humboldt Counties on the dangers of commercial tobacco and providing resources for quitting
- Distributing newsletters on topics such as dangers associated with commercial tobacco: vaping, smoking, smokeless tobacco products and the importance and education of traditional tobacco to tribal/non-tribal organizations
- Meeting with the Community Outreach Resources and Education Coalition (C.O.R.E.) and Teen Advisory Group (T.A.G.) to provide education on the dangers of commercial tobacco, the importance of educational outreach on this topic, training opportunities, and how social media content and article writing are important tools that can be used in order to get information out to tribal communities.
- Provide community-wide wellness initiatives with embedded tobacco cessation and prevention education.
- Collaborating with Tribal and non-Tribal entities on the adoption of commercial tobacco-free outdoor policies.
