Mental Health Awareness: Self-Care as Your Foundation

At United Indian Health Services, caring for people is at the heart of everything we do.

Every day, we see the strength of our communities in the way people care for family, support one another, and continue moving forward through difficult times.

But one important part of wellness is often forgotten: caring for yourself.

Some people think of self-care as something temporary, like taking a break or relaxing after a hard day. Those things can help, but real self-care goes deeper than that.

Real self-care is about creating a life that feels healthier, steadier, and more manageable over time.

In Native communities, healing has always been about balance. Wellness is not only physical. Mind, body, spirit, family, culture, and community are all connected.

That is why small daily habits matter so much.

Creating steady parts of your day can help the body and mind feel calmer and more supported, like:

  • Eating regular meals
  • Drinking enough water
  • Moving your body with walks or stretching
  • Getting enough rest and sleep
  • Spending quiet moments outside or away from screens
  • Taking time to pause and reset during stressful days

These simple choices help build a stronger foundation for emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness.

Life can be stressful. Many people carry worries about work, finances, health, family responsibilities, or personal struggles. Others feel pressure to stay strong even when they are exhausted.

Over time, carrying too much without support can leave people feeling emotionally drained or overwhelmed.

That is why self-care is not selfish. It is part of staying healthy.

Sometimes self-care looks peaceful, like sitting quietly with coffee in the morning, taking a walk outside, or spending time with family. Other times, self-care means doing something difficult but important.

It may mean asking for help, setting healthy boundaries, getting more sleep, or taking the first step toward healing.

Real self-care is not about being perfect. It is about treating yourself with the same patience and kindness you would offer someone you love.

Part of self-care is learning to slow down enough to notice what you need.

  • Sometimes you may need rest.
  • Sometimes you may need connection.
  • Sometimes you may need quiet.
  • Sometimes you may need support.

And sometimes you may simply need permission to stop carrying everything alone.

Community has always been part of healing. Connection with family, friends, culture, spirituality, and trusted support systems all play an important role in wellness.

Even small moments of connection matter.

Movement and rest matter too. Gentle movement like walking, stretching, gardening, or spending time outside can lower stress and improve mood. Rest helps the mind and body recover.

At UIHS, we also recognize the important role culture and tradition play in healing. Healing can happen in many ways, and different people find strength in different places.

There is no single path to wellness.

For some people, healing begins with counseling or treatment. For others, it begins with reconnecting to family, culture, spirituality, creativity, nature, or community support.

Often, healing comes through many small steps taken over time.

That is one of the most important things to remember about self-care: small choices matter.

Over time, small acts of care can help build more balance, resilience, patience, energy, and peace.

Self-care is not about escaping your life. It is about supporting yourself so life feels more manageable and sustainable.

Self-Care Activity Goal

Choose one positive support for yourself this week and practice it consistently.

It could be:

  • Taking a daily walk
  • Going to bed earlier
  • Spending quiet time outdoors
  • Reaching out to someone you trust

You do not need to change everything at once. Healing is not about perfection.

Keep it simple. Keep it steady. Small steps matter.
