Building a new high tunnel hoop house for increased production in the spring and winter months has been a dream of the Community Nutrition Program for many years. Now, after receiving cost-share funding from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, we can see that dream come true! With the help and expertise of Edward Mata, Garden Specialist, and Shawn Fraser, Facilities Technician, the high tunnel is nearing completion.
The high tunnel hoop house will significantly extend the growing season of the garden and provide year-round production of produce such as tender greens (lettuce, spinach) and root crops (radishes, carrots, and beets). We are also excited about growing more rotations of favorite fruits such as tomatoes!
A big thank you to Erin Taylor, former NRCS Tribal Liaison of Humboldt County, for helping make our dream a reality!
