The UIHS Health Promotion & Education (HPE) Department, in partnership with the Community Outreach Resources & Education (C.O.R.E.) Coalition, hosted the bi-annual gathering to honor local tribal elders on October 25, 2025, at the Bear River Tish-non Community Center. Throughout the year, the HPE team and C.O.R.E. members work together to raise funds for this important event. Many C.O.R.E. members have been instrumental in planning the Elders’ Honoring for years – some for decades – and the HPE team is deeply grateful for their dedication, wisdom, and grace.

The event opened with a blessing from Bear River elder Barry Brenard, who also shared a moving historical account of the Bear River people. A moment of silence followed to honor beloved community members who have passed this year. Guests then enjoyed a photo booth where families and friends could capture memories together.

A special cultural presentation honored Betty Brown for her extensive work in preserving and supporting Tolowa Fish Camp traditions. Bear River Cultural Leader Maggie Wortman led a group of dancers in a beautiful presentation of traditional songs and dances. Before the meal, Carol Larsen offered a blessing, and youth from the Teen Advisory Group (TAG) provided thoughtful assistance throughout the event, serving elders during the meal and attending to their needs – creating a meaningful exchange across generations.

The meal itself was a highlight of the day. Ed Mata of the UIHS Potawot Community Garden prepared salmon in the traditional way – skewered on old-growth redwood stakes and slow-cooked over manzanita embers. Elders enjoyed a variety of lovingly prepared foods, including the traditionally cooked salmon, elk stew, salads, side dishes, and an array of delicious desserts.

Following dessert, elders were recognized individually as their names were called to receive a Certificate of Thanks and a gift in appreciation of their lifelong contributions. Their perseverance, leadership, and commitment to culture remind us that we stand where we are today because of the paths they have walked.

As the gathering came to a close, Charlene Storr offered a Closing Blessing. TAG members, along with C.O.R.E. and HPE staff, ensured that each elder was cared for as they collected their gifts and prepared to depart. We look forward to seeing our community in the coming years and reuniting again in two years’ time for the next UIHS Bi-Annual Elders’ Honoring.
