Spring is here and we are ready for it! Longer days, warmer weather, and the smell of something good on the grill this season has a lot to offer. Here are a few things to keep in mind so you and your family can enjoy every bit of it.
Get your sunshine. Sunlight helps your body produce Vitamin D, which plays a big role in keeping your immune system strong. Even a short walk outside can lift your mood and give your body a boost. Enjoy it while you can!
Rest up. Sleep is one of the most powerful tools your immune system has. When we’re well-rested, our bodies are much better at fighting off whatever is going around. Spring can be busy make sure rest is still on the schedule.
Yes, some viruses are still out there. Warmer weather doesn’t mean germs take a break. Respiratory viruses are still circulating, and seasonal allergies can make it hard to tell what’s what. If your sneezing and sniffling are accompanied by fever, body aches, or fatigue, it may be more than just pollen. Take care of yourself and check with your medical team if you have concerns.
Wash those hands. It never gets old, hand hygiene is still one of the best defenses we have against spreading illness. Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after being out in public.
And speaking of eating, let’s talk BBQ safety! Community gatherings and backyard barbecues are one of the best parts of spring. A little food safety know-how goes a long way toward keeping everyone at the table feeling good.
- Separate raw meats. Seperate from ready-to-eat foods like fruits, veggies, and sides in the cooler, on the counter, and on the grill.
-
Cook it all the way through. Ground beef should reach 160°F, poultry 165°F, and whole cuts of meat 145°F. A food thermometer is your best friend.
-
Don’t let food sit out too long. In warm weather, bacteria grow fast. Two hours is the limit one hour if it’s really hot outside. When in doubt, throw it out.
-
Keep the cooler cold. Pack plenty of ice and keep the food cooler closed as much as possible.
This is a beautiful season to gather, eat well, rest, and take care of one another. Wishing you all a happy and healthy spring!
