The Child & Family Services (CFS) Department Program at UIHS provides a wide range of services to the local Indian communities. We are working to improve the quality of life for Indian families by being sensitive to Indian traditions in the healing process. Our program treats Indian children and adults who are struggling with personal adjustment, emotional problems, or substance abuse/addictions. The following is a brief overview of the services and special programs offered.

Mental Health Service

Treatment is most effective when families and communities work together to provide appropriate and accessible services.

"We blend tradition, culture and modern treatment to help build strong, successful youth and families."

CalWorks Program
CalWorks funding from the California Department of Social Services has been made available through the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs to provide culturally relevant services in designated Indian Health Clinics. Clients are assessed for mental health and substance abuse services. In addition, Services are provided as necessary for clients to obtain or retain employment, or to participate in county Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Welfare-to-Work activities, or the CalWorks Program.

Individual Therapy: In individual psychotherapy personal problems and concerns are addressed in an environment, which facilitates the client's potential for identifying, achieving, and maintaining personal goals.

Family Therapy: Family therapy provides a neutral environment in which family members, both immediate and extended, can explore issues that are negatively impacting family dynamics and children.

Juvenile Hall Assessments and Counseling: Once a week a mental health counselor goes into the Juvenile Hall facility in Eureka to meet and work with Indian youth. Counseling services are provided to all youth who have either self-identified or have been identified by the Juvenile Hall staff as American Indian. In Del Norte County, the Probation Department sends CFS a list of American Indians who are currently in the Juvenile Hall. A substance abuse counselor will see the youth there.

Psychiatrist Services: CFS contracts with a local Psychiatrist who comes to Potawot twice a week and provides telepsychiatry to Del Norte clients once a month. The Psychiatrist provides psychiatric and psychotropic medication evaluations for clients. The Psychiatrist is also available for training and consultation with therapists, substance abuse counselors, and medical providers. A mental health therapist or a medical doctor must refer a client for psychiatric services.

Couples Therapy: Couples therapy provides couples with a forum to strengthen relationships, process their conflicts and to develop and practice alternative behaviors and coping styles.
